A bicycle chain transfers energy to the rear wheel...it doesn't do work along the way. Bad analogy

You are thinking of the diameter of a chain in the same respect as the diameter of a driven gear, the problem with that thinking is that the chain is only a conveyor much as the Teeth to a gear are, . The drive sprocket determines the speed of the chain, yes a shorter chain will make more revolutions per min / sec, BUT the actual speed of the links of the chain will not change unless the drive sprocket changes. About the only detrimental effect of running a short bar are faster wear of the chain
Написал: Josh Carmack, 16.12.2012, 07:33
You are correct, the chain would revolve around the bar more times per minute, BUT the FPM of the chain would not change, and a shorter bar would have excess oil, as the oil would have much less distance to travel and less surface area for the same volume of oil

Thats the strangest sycamore Ive seen, wheres the scaly bark?

You would not want to haul a 3120 around with a 20 inch bar around for very long. lol Im not sure it would cut through anything faster then a 346xp with the same size bar.. unless you change to a larger sprocket..

we run 395xp all day long every day very hard and we us 24" and 28" bars and have done that for many years

I may be wrong, but I think I am right. I appreciate the good metaphor though, it gave me a new way to look at this. The bike would not go faster, because there would be more tension too keep the longer chain connected, thus exerting more force from the human operater. If the chain were shorter, it seems that the top speed would be reached more quickly and that there would be more energy to keep that speed.

Mweba is correct.
Написал: mweba1, 05.12.2012, 01:17
No, you are incorrect. Lets say you have a bicycle, leaving the gears standard size while running a standard length chain. Does the bike go faster if say the distance between gears is stretched, making the chain longer? As to the over reving, a shorter bar offers less load making it easier to rev the saw out side of its safe limit. A competent operator would hold the proper load for a shorter bar.

Not to be a know it all, but why would running the saw at full throttle damage the saw if it had a shorter bar than it was designed for? Because the chain would revolve around the bar too quickly. It is okay to disagree with me, but I am right.
Написал: mweba1, 05.12.2012, 00:19
That is incorrect. The chain speed does not change unless engine speed or rim sprocket diameter is increased. In turn, unless you turn the oiler down, you would be slinging excess oil off the tip on a short bar. The only damage that could be done by switching to shorter cutting equipment would be due to over reving the saw.

A saw designed for a 48" bar would burn a 20" bar up. Just for example, say the engine of the saw runs the chain around a 4 foot bar 100 times a second. If you put a 1 foot bar on that saw, that chain will rotate 400 times a second. The oil pump wouldn't keep the bar lubricated enough, because that isn't the design. I was wondering if anything else would fail on the saw with that sort of modification? Or, do you even know? (This may sound smart-elecky, but that isn't my intention.)

I run a 28" bar most of the time and for me it is about perfect. And as mweba1 said, it doesn't hurt the bar at all.
Написал: mweba1, 18.11.2012, 20:25
Wouldn't bother the bar any, you may want to keep an eye on over reving the saw though. A smaller saw would make more sense.

Don't knock the operator, i think you have to be awfully skilled and show constant presence of mind to do this work all day, one lapse of good judgement and out of it for life. Well done guys, and for god's sake be careful out there !!
Написал: bauhbjingles, 18.11.2012, 05:03
What if I put a 20" bar on one of these saws for cutting up smaller stuff? That would burn the bar up, wouldn't it? What else would happen to the saw?

Is anyone wearing gloves and protective boots and trousers/pants? Not sure if you need it in the US, over here in Finland you must wear it if you work outside, it has saved some lives

Now why would you want to use this saw 80-100 feet up a tree? Hell I didn't even want to use it on the ground. There is no need for a 3120 outside of milling or grinding stumps. A 394/395 has much better chain speed and handling. This saw was run for this job only to verify it ran out after rebuild. The chain was new although I did make the mistake of running an eight pin on it. Thanks for watching.

it would help if the chain was sharp and you cut straight, we can see from the way your using it that your an amateur just trying to shwo off "look at me with the big saw" the real skill comes when you start to swing a 3120 around sat 80/100 ft up a tree
