Continuously Variable Transaxle (CVT) Operation

Weber State University (WSU) - Automotive Technology Department - Transmission Lab. GM Continuously Variable Transaxle (CVT) model VT25. How a belt-driven CVT Works. Ford, GM, Honda, Chrysler (JATCO), and Nissan CVTs are similar. CVTs allow the engine to operate at the RPM for peak efficiency while increasing and decreasing the transmission drive ratio to change vehicle speed. This video helps satisfy NATEF Task A2.C.23. "Describe the operational characteristics of a continuously variable transmission (CVT)", a priority 3 task. eCVTs are different and are demonstrated in another WeberAuto video. humm preety simple concept, can you give an estimate on how many miles the steel belt last on a normal car? Also what kind of lubricant does it use?

Funny how CVT has changed from what I learned in college during the 80's as constant velocity transmission to now the Continuously Variable Transaxle or transmission. Then they were driven by a rubber/steel belt and today they are steel belt.

the heat in an auto trans is mostly made by torque convertor and clutch packs. i would expect cvt to run cooler once TC is locked.

Man, unlike you I have ridden a scooter with CVT for too many miles and in too many places where you wouldn't even ride a bus and I know how often you have to change tension belts and what are the drawbacks and flaws of the system. Modern gearboxes easily run without any intervention,even oil change for good 200,000 km. Same can never be said for CVTs.Belts in a car are normally changed every 100K km or less, and they don't have power transfer function, just timing of valves.Comparison is flawed

Does the tranny fluid need be changed on cvt trannies? I have a cvt on a 07 nissan sentra and have not changed it yet. Do you think a flush is better than a regular change fo tranny fluid? Thanks for the video and hope to get a response!

Hi, great explanation. I have noticed that you applied hydraulic pressure to bring in the drive pulleys together. Is this what actually happens in a car when you accelerate and decelerate? where does the hydraulic pressure come from?

The Chrysler CVT is a piece of crap ., the jeep I took out felt gutless and the engine sped up but the vehicle did nothing for what seemed a few seconds , If the engineers program shift points then maybe it might be worth looking at , but I would avoid them right now .

Where would you put it? Currently, It's a two pulley system. One on the motor and one on the trans-axle end. It would need a very heavy duty belt. But then you get into wear on the belt and pulley surfaces. I'm surprised the auto industry is trying this. Probably fewer moving parts than an automatic tranny but the belt is the weakest link.

Great explanation, are any specalised tools required to strip and rebuild this transaxle. I have 2 Honda Airwaves, One is fabulous and the other won't go up even a small hill. If I can fix it , it will be a great car. Parts seem to be readily available here in New Zealand. Any help to get this transaxle out and working again will be appreciated. Does any one know if the transaxle can be removed without the motor ? Thanks All
